Potty Training

When is the right time to potty train? As with everything else, I figure I'll follow my gut and I'll just know when the time is right.

In preparation, I've made a game in the bathroom. Every time the toilet gets flushed, we wave bye bye. Monkey now does this unprompted and even says "buh" while waving (she does this with bath water, too..). Every night before her bath, I sit her on the toilet after taking her diaper off. I ask if she wants to make a pee-pee and flush even though she doesn't do anything. I really just want her to be used to it and not scared of the big toilet when the time does come.

T and I started fooling around a few months ago. I noticed Monkey had a stinky diaper so I turned to T with my finger on my nose and said "Not it!" We've been jokingly doing this to one another ever since.

I started to wonder if the time is getting close. Monkey has started to come to us when she has a dirty diaper - a few times with a clean diaper in tow.

Guess what our darling daughter started to do this week!?! After taking a particularly messy poop, she turned to me smiling with her finger on her nose! And this is her new way of asking to be changed. Every wet fart (she was still getting over that stomach bug and had quite a few) and every poop she's had since, she's turned to me with a big grin and her finger on her nose.

That is a riot!!! She's a monkey see monkey do alright!! LOL!!

Your doing the right thing "practice practice practice"

you may want to start "practicing" a few times a day but she will start letting you know when she's ready... and it's really much easier just to wait til she is!

As for ages... it's all about her (and when you can stay close to a potty for about a week)... my oldest trained at exactly 3. One twin at 2 1/2 decided she was going to train and never turned back. My "middle child" twin was 3 1/2. As much as I tried she would keep saying "Not today, maybe on Saturday". When she finally decided to train though
it was complete and fast!

Don't use pull-ups unless your sure it's going to happen and may even want to just use them as a panty protector. I see tooo many kids use them like diapers and get bad rashes since they don't breath like diapers.

good luck!!!!

Okay, I'm going to get in on this one because as an involved daddy, I've been privy to this fun...

Our oldest found so much excitement in "Elmo's Pottytime" and wanted to do what Elmo did... in addition, we only used pull-ups as nighty diapers... we had the feeling that having a pull-up during the day sort of gave a ticket to go pee or poopy... so that meant a couple of wet panties, but our oldest couldn't pee on Monkey George, Dora, or Elmo and that helped... finally, with a successful number one or deuce, we would reward her with something we would never give typically (candy)... She was peeing during the day and having an occasional accident following her second birthday...

Our youngest now two and a half is relatively trained and uses the potty for both duties, she still wears a pull-up at night but we treat her the same way as our first...

I'm so happy to be 90% out of diapers, but the girls won't stop growing and it's hard to put on the brakes... Our oldest just graduated from her toddler bed and got her twin size today... and our little one was very happy to get her sister's bed and so far has been in it without a peep for about one hour now...

Okay, I'm back to manly hunting, fishing, and outdoors stuff... Take care...

Why do boys take so much longer than girls! :)

SAHM - I do intend to keep "praciticing". I think I'm going to start bringing her to the toilet when she's messed her diaper to try to get her to associate the 2 together, too.

DEDH - I appreciate a man's perspective. My husband is as clueless as I am. lol

Osh - That makes me chuckle.

TRO - I wish I knew. My nephew is 3 years 4 months and is FINALLY out of diapers. Something tells me Monkey won't be waiting that long....
